Sardine Run 2007: Game of Cat and Mouse begins...

Gannets on the Charge
We had a full day at sea today, steaming well over 150km’s in search of action, and with the help of our spotter Eric got into a really cool activity cell around 11am. Enroute we passed five Bryde’s whales, resident animals that feed on the sardines, and saw many small clusters of gannets flying south.

The activity cell stretched over a distance of around 20km’s and comprised small pockets of gannets attacking what we presume to be small pockets of sardines. Primarily the gannets appeared to be following up on dolphin attacks on these shoals, both common and bottlenose, but as the dolphins were on the charge and not hanging around, the attacks lasted only a few minutes and would then reform in another area, making filming extremely challenging.

Calling Eric
It was really brilliant to be in the middle of all of this, despite that fact that the attacks were too brief to really film properly, and it gave Mark, myself and Justin Maguire an excellent opportunity to start working on our approach to filming with this type of rig and this type of action. As we lost the sun we started our long trip back home, a great first day with all the signs in place for an even better day tomorrow.

How long will this all last? And will you get a chance to hop over board at least once or twice? Freediving with sardines - should be a remarkable experience. Just watch out for the bronze whalers when they zoom in - they are probably not as gentle as our tiger babes!!...

Enjoy!!

De Wolf, it all depends but traditionally the sardine run occurs in June and July, as the sardines move up the coast in a small cold water corridor. If that corridor doesn't materialize, the run can be very small or not happen at all.

I will certainly be on the look out for the coppers and bronze whalers, we've seen a few breaching from the boat already! Currently no plans to get wet, but I'm sure I 'll get a chance at some stage. Chat soon!
