BBC Natures Great events "The great Tide" on the Sardine Run goes to air tomorrow (March 4th) at 21h00 UK time. on BBC1
Saw the programme today on BBC 2, very impressive battle of the sea.
I was wondering though why the sharks didn't seem to go for the diving birds.
Maybe not part of their natural diet i guess....
Underwater cameraman Barry Skinstad filmed a shark having a go at a gannet underwater in the 2008 Sardine Run, only to promptly spit it out of its mouth, with no apparent harm done to the bird. My sense is that with all the protein rich sardines around, the sharks are very focused on a food source that will give them a far greater caloric return for their efforts, thus leaving the gannets alone.
